The biggest cost factor is whether your home already has ductwork — adding central air to a house with existing ducts is a much smaller job than running new ducts or installing multi-zone mini-splits. This directory lists licenses and doesn't collect pricing, so get written estimates from two or three licensed contractors, and make sure each quote covers electrical work and permit fees.

Yes. The usual options are ductless mini-splits, small-duct high-velocity systems, or adding conventional ductwork. Mini-splits are the most common choice in Rockland's older homes because they avoid opening up walls and give each room its own temperature control.

Yes — the NYS Clean Heat program offers rebates on cold-climate heat pumps and ductless mini-splits through Orange & Rockland, the utility serving Rockland County. Participating contractors usually apply the rebate directly to your quote, and federal energy-efficiency tax credits may also apply. Ask any contractor you call whether they participate in NYS Clean Heat.

Sizing should come from a Manual J load calculation based on your home's square footage, insulation, and windows — not a rule of thumb. An oversized system short-cycles and leaves the house humid; an undersized one runs nonstop on the hottest days. Ask any contractor quoting a system how they arrived at the size.
